RESOLUTION NO. RS2007-1983

A resolution requesting the Mayor and the Police Department to analyze the crime hotspots in Davidson County and to develop a plan to reduce crime in these areas. 

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department has the responsibility under the Metropolitan Charter for the reservation of the public peace, the prevention and detection of crime, the apprehension of criminals, the protection of personal and property rights, and the enforcement of state and local laws; and

WHEREAS, the Police Department also maintains and tracks statistical data regarding all crimes reported within Davidson County and posts interactive crime maps on the department’s website showing the location of crimes committed within the past 28 days; and 

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Council recognizes that protecting the safety of the public is one of the most important responsibilities of local government; and

WHEREAS, as evidence of the support for public safety functions, the Council has approved increased funding for the Police Department in recent years; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Police Department develop a comprehensive plan to address the crime hotspots in Nashville and keep the Council informed on a periodic basis as to the progress being made toward implementation of the plan.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1.         That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Mayor and the Police Department to analyze the crime hotspots in Davidson County and to develop a plan to reduce crime in these areas. 

Section 2.         The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a copy of this Resolution to Mayor Bill Purcell and to Police Chief Ronal Serpas. 

Section 3.         The Mayor and the Police Department are further requested to present a copy of the plan to the Metropolitan Council within ninety (90) days after the adoption of this Resolution, and to provide a report to the Council every sixty (60) days thereafter regarding the progress being made toward implementation of the plan.

Section 4.         That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.

Mr. President:

I move to amend Resolution No. RS2007-1983 by deleting Section 3 in its entirety and substituting in lieu thereof the following new Section 3:

“Section 3. The Police Department is further requested to provide a report to the Council Public Safety Committee at the time the regular quarterly report is submitted outlining the substance of the plan and the progress being made toward implementation of the plan.”
