RESOLUTION NO. RS2007-1903
A resolution requesting the Mayor's Office and the Parks and Recreation Department to place appropriate ribbons in the Public Square and in other public spacesto acknowledge and cause us to remember the students and faculty members of Virginia Tech killed, wounded, or traumatized by the attacks perpetrated on the Virginia Tech campus on Monday, April 16, 2007.
WHEREAS, on Monday, April 16, 2007, thirty-two members of the student body and faculty of Virginia Tech were wantonly and most-brutally murdered; and
WHEREAS, the citizens of Nashville and Davidson County grieve with their fellow-countrymen over this tragic loss of life; and
WHEREAS, it is appropriate that all Nashvillians remember these victims of violence and their families; and
WHEREAS, by placing ribbons in Virginia Tech’s school colors, Chicago Maroon and Burnt Orange, in several visible places around the City's Public Square and in other public spaces under the control of the Metropolitan Government, the people of Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County can show support for those in the Virginia Tech family who suffer now in grief and sadness;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Mayor's Office and the Parks and Recreation Department to place, for thirty (30) days from the date of passage of this resolution, Chicago Maroon and Burnt Orange ribbons in appropriate places in the Public Square and in other public spaces under the control of the Metropolitan Government as a way to acknowledge and cause us to remember the students and faculty members of Virginia Tech killed, wounded, or traumatized by the attacks perpetrated on the Virginia Tech campus on April 16, 2007.
Section 2. That the Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a copy of this Resolution to Mayor Bill Purcell and to Parks Director Roy Wilson.
Section 3. That the Mayor's Office and the Parks and Recreation Department are further requested to advise the Council, after the passage of thirty (30) days from the adoption of this Resolution, of actions taken in furtherance of this resolution.
Section 4. That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
