RESOLUTION NO. RS2007-1861

A resolution proclaiming April 11, 2007, Got milk? Think About Your Drink Day.

WHEREAS, with the current obesity crisis in this country, it seems that most people focus on changing what they put on their plates.  But a new analysis of U.S. beverage habits called What America Drinks   suggests we should also take a closer look at what’s in our glasses; and

WHEREAS, the report suggests that beverage choice may be playing a powerful role in how much we weigh and the overall quality of the American diet.  Specifically, the report found that people who drank a lot of sugar-sweetened beverages and little milk, tended to weigh more while people who drank more milk and fewer sugary beverages tended to weigh less; and

WHEREAS, to urge Americans to Think About Your Drink, the milk industry has teamed up with dietitians, pediatricians and school nutrition professionals to promote healthier beverage choices.  Choosing nutrient-rich beverages like lowfat milk instead of nutrient-poor, sugar-sweetened beverages like soft drinks may be a key strategy to help fight obesity; and

WHEREAS, Drinking milk is an important part of a healthy diet and studies suggest that it may help promote a healthy weight. The U.S. Dietary Guidelines recommend three servings of lowfat or fat free milk everyday, along with other nutrient-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains; and

WHEREAS, The national got milk? Think About Your Drink Tour is here today along with Curves International and Shape magazine, celebrating  local residents who have committed themselves to maintaining a healthy lifestyle by eating a low calorie diet, exercising and continuing to drink 24 ounces of lowfat milk daily; and

WHEREAS, The Tour is hosting free events to give Nashville residents the tools they need to maintain a healthy weight, including free health assessments, get-fit tips from Curves, milk mustache photos, and free beverage analysis; and

WHEREAS, It is appropriate that a day be set aside to celebrate those leading healthy lifestyles and encourage others to take those same steps to become more healthy; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council proclaim this 11th day of April 2007 as, “Think About Your Drink Day” in Nashville.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1.  The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as proclaiming April 11, 2007, Got milk? Think About Your Drink Day.

Section 2.  This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
