RESOLUTION NO. RS2007-1808

A resolution proclaiming March 2007 as Kidney Disease Prevention Month and declaring March 8, 2007 as World Kidney Day.

WHEREAS, there are more than 9,000 residents in Tennessee suffering permanent, irreversible kidney failure that requires either kidney dialysis or a kidney transplant to survive; and

WHEREAS, of January 2007, over 1450 Tennesseans are on the waiting list for a kidney transplant; and

WHEREAS, the National Kidney Foundation estimates that approximately 20 million Americans have chronic kidney disease; and

WHEREAS, early detection and treatment of kidney disease could delay the progression of chronic kidney disease, resulting in fewer patients requiring kidney dialysis or kidney transplants; and

WHEREAS, the National Kidney Foundation of Middle Tennessee provides vital programs and services for kidney patients and their families, including kidney disease screenings for high-risk patients; and

WHEREAS, March 8, 2007 has been declared World Kidney Day and March as National Kidney Month.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council proclaims March 2007 as Kidney Disease Prevention Month in Nashville and Davidson County and that March 8, 2007 be declared World Kidney Day.

Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
