RESOLUTION NO. RS2007-1806

A resolution honoring the 2006-2007 John Overton High School Marching Band.

WHEREAS, John Overton High School, named for famed historical figure Judge John Overton, is one of Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County's premier comprehensive high schools;

WHEREAS, John Overton High School has a long history of excellence both in academics and extracurricular programs;

WHEREAS, one such extracurricular program that has enjoyed notable success is the "Awesome" John Overton High School Marching Band;

WHEREAS, during its 2006 marching season, the John Overton High School Marching Band performed a program entitled "Doorways to Enlightenment - Music of the English Composer Philip Sparke" to great acclaim;

WHEREAS, at the MTSBOA Marching Festival, the John Overton High School Marching Band received all "Superior" ratings;

WHEREAS, at the Mid-South Marching Festival, the John Overton High School Marching Band placed first in its class, received the Outstanding Overall Guard Award, and was named Grand Champion;

WHEREAS, at the Music City Invitational Marching Band Contest, the John Overton High School Marching Band swept nearly every category, winning, the Mayor's Cup in the large band division;

WHEREAS, the John Overton High School Marching Band also participated in the 45th annual Contest of Champions held at Middle Tennessee State University;

WHEREAS, the Contest of Champions, sponsored by the Middle Tennessee State University Band of Blue, is the ultimate high school marching band competition in Tennessee;

WHEREAS, by virtue of its performance in Contest of Champions preliminary competition and a Superior Rating, the John Overton High School Marching Band qualified for finals competition and was awarded a Finalist Cup;

WHEREAS, this was the 26th consecutive year that the John Overton High School Marching Band was selected for Contest of Champions finals competition;

WHEREAS, after taking the field of competition to shouts from supporters of "Go, Johnny-O!" and chants of "Overton! Overton!" the John Overton Band performed with confidence, artistry, and panache;

WHEREAS, with an adjudicators' score of 86.64, the John Overton High School Marching Band placed fourth in the Contest of Champions;

WHEREAS, on November 11, 2006, the John Overton High School Marching Band honored Tennessee's military veterans by marching in the 2006 Veterans' Day parade;

WHEREAS, the John Overton High School Marching Band was selected to represent Tennessee and the men of the U.S.S. Tennessee (BB-43) at the 65th anniversary observance of the events of December 7, 1941, when forces of the Imperial Japanese Navy attacked United States military installations on the Island of Oahu in the then-Territory of Hawaii and vessels of the United States Navy peacefully at anchor at Pearl Harbor;

WHEREAS, on November 19, 2006, the John Overton High School Marching Band departed from Nashville International Airport for Honolulu, Hawaii;

WHEREAS, while in Hawaii, the John Overton High School Marching Band visited the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor and placed a wreath there to honor the American sailors who lie at rest there beneath the waves;

WHEREAS, at Pearl Harbor, the John Overton High School Marching Band visited the U.S.S. Missouri Memorial, the battleship upon whose deck World War Two came to a close with the surrender of the Empire of Japan to Allied Forces under the command of General of the Army Douglas MacArthur;

WHEREAS, the John Overton High School Marching Band presented a concert while at the U.S.S. Missouri Memorial, performing Our National Anthem, Hawai'i Pono'i, The Washington Post March, The Navy Hymn, Armed Forces Salute, God Bless America, and America The Beautiful

WHEREAS, while on the island of Oahu, the John Overton High School Marching Band enjoyed visits to the Polynesian Cultural Center, Hawaiian Waters Adventures Park , and the Dole Pineapple Plantation;

WHEREAS, on Thursday, November 23rd, the parents, student members, and directors of the John Overton High School Marching Band gathered together in observance of Thanksgiving Day to reflect upon their blessings and to enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving Feast;

WHEREAS, on Friday, November 24th, the John Overton High School Marching Band marched in the 8th annual Waikiki Holiday Parade saluting the survivors of Pearl Harbor with USS Tennessee survivor Earl Smith leading the band in the parade;

WHEREAS, after a week-long sojourn, the John Overton High School Marching Band bid a fond "Aloha!" to Hawaii and returned to Nashville International Airport;

WHEREAS, the John Overton High School Marching Band enjoys the enthusiastic support of Dr. Monica Dillard, Executive Principal of John Overton High School;

WHEREAS, the directors of the John Overton High School Marching Band are the incomparable Jo Ann Hood and Debbie Burton;

WHEREAS, special staff who so greatly contributed to the success of the 2006 John Overton High School Marching Band included Damon Padilla, Christopher Lester, Jonathan Wright, Chris Thomas, Brian Nelson, Meghan Feltes, Ashley Jarrell, and Gary Miller;

WHEREAS, the John Overton High School Marching Band owes a great debt of gratitude to the John Overton Band Boosters organization comprised of parents and friends of the John Overton High School Band, whose tireless efforts at great personal sacrifice ensured that the logistic needs of the John Overton High School Marching Band were met;

WHERAS, the officers of the 2006-2007 John Overton Band Boosters are Malcolm Ault, president; Sandy Holland, 1st Vice President; Mark Miller, 2nd Vice President; Audrey Miller, 3rd Vice President; June Saltiel, Secretary; and Charla Cole, Treasurer.

WHEREAS, the 2006 John Overton High School Marching Band included the following student performers from John Overton High School, Martin Luther King, Jr. Academic Magnet High School, East Literature Magnet High School, and Nashville School of the Arts;

WHEREAS, in all ways both on and off the field of competition, the members of the 2006 John Overton High School Marching Band exemplified the best the Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools have to offer and were a credit to their city, their schools, and their families;

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize the 2006 John Overton High School Marching Band for its many successes;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY THAT:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as honoring the 2006 John Overton High School Marching Band.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to the John Overton High School Marching Band.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
