RESOLUTION NO. RS2007-1793

A resolution recognizing NEA's Read Across America Celebration.

WHEREAS, March 2, 2007, marks the 10th annual celebration of reading, and Dr. Seuss's 103rd birthday; and

WHEREAS, the National Read Across America Celebration is sponsored by the National Education Association, in conjunction with the Tennessee Education Association and the Metropolitan Nashville Education Association, and is committed to promoting reading as the catalyst for our students' future academic success, their preparation for America's jobs of the future, and their ability to compete in a global economy; and

WHEREAS, we are celebrating in Nashville with individuals, government officials, business leaders, educators and others going into the schools and reading books by Dr. Seuss; and

WHEREAS, the state of Tennessee has provided significant leadership in the area of community involvement in the education of our youth, grounded in the principle that educational investment is key to the community's well being and long-term quality of life; and

WHEREAS, the National Education Association, the Tennessee Education Association, and the Metropolitan Nashville Education Association's Read Across America program, a national celebration of Dr. Seuss's birthday held on March 2, 2007, promotes reading and adult involvement in the education of our state's students; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council enthusiastically endorses Read Across America and recommits our community to engage in programs and activities to make America's children the best readers in the world.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing. NEA's Read Across America Celebration.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to representatives of the Tennessee Education Association.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
