RESOLUTION NO. RS2007-1786

A resolution requesting the Department of Public Works to provide a report to the Metropolitan Council regarding the feasibility of expanding the curbside recycling program to the General Services District.

WHEREAS, recycling continues to be a popular and environmentally sound way to handle discarded materials which can be collected, processed, and used to make new products; and

WHEREAS, the citizens of Nashville and Davidson County have repeatedly expressed their support for recycling programs and facilities made available by the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County; and

WHEREAS, in 2002, the Metropolitan Government began the "Curby" curbside recycling program in the Urban Services District; and

WHEREAS, according to the 2005 Annual Solid Waste Report to the Metropolitan Council, more than 13,000 tons of recyclables were collected through the Curby program, while 5,400 tons of recyclables were dropped off at the various convenience centers in Davidson County; and

WHEREAS, convenience is a key factor in allowing citizens the opportunity to recycle; and

WHEREAS, expanding the Curby program to the General Services District would greatly increase the convenience factor, which would result in a much larger number of households in the General Services District recycling a portion of their solid waste; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Department of Public Works examine the feasibility of expanding the Curby program to include households within the General Services District.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby requests that the Department of Public Works provide a detailed report to the Metropolitan Council within sixty (60) days from the date of adoption of this Resolution regarding the feasibility of expanding the curbside recycling program to include properties within the General Services District.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to the Director of the Department of Public Works.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its passage, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
