RESOLUTION NO. RS2007-1758
A resolution requesting the Metropolitan Civil Service Commission to recommend an amendment to the longevity pay plan for Metropolitan Government employees removing the requirement that School Crossing Guards work 2,080 hours to be entitled to a year's accumulated service.
WHEREAS, Resolution No. RS2001-642 adopted a longevity pay plan for employees of the Metropolitan Government; and
WHEREAS, although the longevity pay plan is available for part-time employees of the Metropolitan Government, Resolution No. RS2001-642 provides that part-time employees are entitled to a year's accumulated service for each 2,080 hours worked; and
WHEREAS, School Crossing Guards employed by the Police Department are part-time employees that provide a vital service to the Metropolitan Government by protecting the safety of our children as they travel to and from school; and
WHEREAS, until last year, School Crossing Guards received longevity pay based upon their years of service, not the number of hours worked; and
WHEREAS, many of the School Crossing Guards that did not receive the longevity pay last year were counting on receipt of the funds to provide Christmas gifts for their families, and were not given adequate notice that they would not be receiving the longevity pay; and
WHEREAS, the Council deems it appropriate that School Crossing Guards receive longevity pay in the same manner as full-time employees; and
WHEREAS, since such action would be an amendment to the longevity pay plan, it is appropriate that the Civil Service Commission consider the matter and make a recommendation to the Metropolitan Council.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Metropolitan Civil Service Commission to recommend an amendment to the longevity pay plan established by Resolution No. RS2001-642 that would remove the requirement that School Crossing Guards work 2,080 hours to be entitled to a year's accumulated service.
Section 2. The Metropolitan Civil Service Commission is further requested to respond to the Council as to the feasibility of and/or action taken in compliance with the request stated in Section 1 hereof not later than sixty (60) days after the adoption of this Resolution.
Section 3. The Metropolitan Clerk is requested to send a copy of this Resolution to each member of the Metropolitan Civil Service Commission.
Section 4. That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
