SUBSTITUTE RESOLUTION NO. RS2007-1757

A resolution requesting the Metropolitan Department of Social Services and the Metropolitan Action Commission to create a program that provides for immediate assistance to people in need.

WHEREAS, Nashville, Tennessee is populated by many different citizens who may, at various times, need help or assistance in some manner; and

WHEREAS, there are many different programs available to assist people who have different problems and sometimes it is just a matter of getting the person in need to the right place; and

WHEREAS, there are sometimes situations where immediate problems need immediate solutions, such as a family with no place to go, a pregnant woman with no food or shelter, or an elderly couple whose heat has been turned off and it is a Friday evening during a major cold front; and

WHEREAS, in a City of Nashville's size, there are simply going to be situations that must be dealt with quickly for the protection of our residents.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Metropolitan Social Services Department and the Metropolitan Action Commission to research, review, and establish an emergency assistance center that has the ability and, if budgeted, funding to provide immediate assistance to the residents of Nashville and Davidson County who are in need of help.

Section 2. That Metropolitan Social Services is further requested to respond to the Council as to the feasibility of and/or action taken in compliance with the request stated in Section 1 hereof not later than sixty (60) days after the adoption of this Resolution.


Section 3. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a copy of this Resolution to Gerri Robinson, the Executive Director of Metro Social Services, and to Cynthia L. Croom, the Executive Director of the Metropolitan Action Commission.

Section 4. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
