A resolution declaring English to be the official language of the Metropolitan Government.

WHEREAS, English is the most common language spoken in the United States; and

WHEREAS, the adoption of an official language enhances unity, both locally and nationally, and honors our ancestors from all lands who learned English, as well as those immigrants today who are striving to learn the English language; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Council celebrates and welcomes the cultural contributions of foreign born persons living within the area of the Metropolitan Government; and

WHEREAS, declaring English to be the official language in no way interferes with any individual's right to maintain, use and develop other language skills; and

WHEREAS, Tennessee Code Annotated § 4-1-404 establishes English as the official language of the State of Tennessee, and requires all communications and publications produced by governmental entities to be in English; and

WHEREAS, the council now desires to declare English to be the official language of the Metropolitan Government.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby declares English to be the official language of the Metropolitan Government.

Section 2. That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
