RESOLUTION NO. RS2006-1658

A resolution requesting the Metropolitan Planning Commission to develop a master plan for the redevelopment of the area surrounding Fisk University, Tennessee State University, and Meharry Medical College.

WHEREAS, the area surrounding Fisk University, Tennessee State University (TSU) and Meharry Medical College is an area that is rich in history and culture, but has unfortunately declined over the years due to inadequate planning and development guidelines; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Planning Department continuously works to modify the development plans for the various areas in Nashville to protect the character and integrity of the communities; and

WHEREAS, the Planning Department is currently working on the East Nashville Civic Square community master plan, which has the purpose of creating a plan for development that "reinforces East Nashville's traditional urban fabric by focusing on its commercial areas and ways they can enhance the surrounding residential neighborhoods while creating and identifiable sense of place"; and

WHEREAS, a new plan for the area surrounding Fisk, TSU and Meharry would bring economic benefits to the surrounding neighborhoods, and would help protect and enhance the old homes and buildings in the area; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Planning Commission take the action necessary to create a new plan for the area surrounding Fisk University, Tennessee State University and Meharry Medical College.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Metropolitan Planning Commission to develop a master plan for the redevelopment of the area surrounding Fisk University, Tennessee State University, and Meharry Medical College.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a copy of this Resolution to Rick Bernhardt, the Executive Director of the Metropolitan Commission, and to each member of the Planning Commission.

Section 3. That the Metropolitan Planning Commission is further requested to respond to the Council as to the feasibility of and/or action taken in compliance with the request stated in Section 1 hereof not later than sixty (60) days from the adoption of this Resolution.

Section 4. That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
