RESOLUTION NO. RS2006-1657

A resolution requesting the Metropolitan Department of Public Works, the Metropolitan Traffic and Parking Commission, and the Tennessee Department of Transportation to take the action necessary for the installation of a traffic signal at the Jefferson Street exit from Interstate 40 in north Nashville.

WHEREAS, the Tennessee Department of Transportation is responsible for the construction and maintenance of state roads and highways; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Department of Public Works has the authority under the Metropolitan Charter for the design, construction, maintenance and repair of roads and streets within Davidson County; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Traffic and Parking Commission has the authority under the Charter to adopt regulations for the establishment of traffic control signals; and

WHEREAS, traffic routinely backs up onto Interstate 40 at the Jefferson Street exit during peak hours; and

WHEREAS, vehicles trying to exit onto Jefferson Street heading west often have a long wait due to the inadequate traffic control measures at the end of the exit ramp; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Government routinely enters into contracts with the Tennessee Department of Transportation for signalization projects; and

WHEREAS, a traffic signal at the Jefferson Street exit off of Interstate 40 would greatly help the traffic congestion in the area.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Department of Public Works, the Metropolitan Traffic and Parking Commission, and the Tennessee Department of Transportation to take the action necessary for the installation of a traffic signal at the Jefferson Street exit from Interstate 40 in north Nashville.

Section 2. That the Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a copy of this Resolution to Tennessee Department of Transportation Commissioner Gerald Nicely, to Public Works Director Billy Lynch, and to each member of the Traffic and Parking Commission.

Section 3. That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
