RESOLUTION NO. RS2006-1655

A resolution requesting the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, the Department of Parks and Recreation, and the Metropolitan Development and Housing Agency to remove the chain link fencing around the North Precinct, to develop a park adjacent to the precinct property, and to replace the chain link fencing along Metrocenter Boulevard with a wrought iron or other decorative metal fence.

WHEREAS, a recent article in the Tennessean brought attention to the fact that violent crime has increased in the area of the Cumberland View housing development since the North Precinct was constructed in 2004; and

WHEREAS, residents and employees within the Cumberland View development have suggested that strengthening the bonds between the residents and the police officers at the North Precinct would go a long way toward reducing the violent crime in the area; and

WHEREAS, the North Precinct is surrounded by unsightly, institutional-like chain link fencing; and

WHEREAS, chain link fencing has also been erected along Metrocenter Boulevard in the area of the North Precinct; and

WHEREAS, removing the fence around the North Precinct, replacing the chain link fencing along Metrocenter Boulevard with a decorative metal fence, and constructing a park next to the precinct would help promote positive ties between the Police Department and the residents of the Cumberland View housing development.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, the Department of Parks and Recreation, and the Metropolitan Development and Housing Agency to remove the chain link fencing around the North Precinct, to develop a park adjacent to the precinct property, and to replace the chain link fencing along Metrocenter Boulevard with a wrought iron or other decorative metal fence.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a copy of this Resolution to Police Chief Ronal Serpas, to Roy Wilson, the Director of the Department of Parks and Recreation, and to Phil Ryan, the Executive Director of the Metropolitan Development and Housing Agency.

Section 3. That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
