RESOLUTION NO. RS2006-1654

A resolution requesting the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department to require police officers to use 24th Avenue North when traveling to and from the North Precinct.

WHEREAS, the Cumberland View housing development has been a place of violent crime and drug activity for many years, giving rise to the development's nickname as "Dodge City"; and

WHEREAS, in 2004, the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department opened the North Precinct located at 2231 - 26th Avenue North; and

WHEREAS, at the time the North Precinct opened, residents of the Cumberland View housing development were hopeful that the increased police presence would help curb the violent crime in the area; and

WHEREAS, unfortunately, violent crime has increased within and around the Cumberland View housing development since the North Precinct opened; and

WHEREAS, although the construction of the North Precinct has increased the number of police officers in the area, residents of the Cumberland View development would like to see more officers driving in and around the complex; and

WHEREAS, requiring all officers to use 24th Avenue North when going to and coming from the North Precinct would substantially increase the police presence around the Cumberland View development and hopefully act to prevent violent crime in the area.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department to require police officers to use 24th Avenue North when traveling to and from the North Precinct.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a copy of this Resolution to Police Chief Ronal Serpas.

Section 3. That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
