RESOLUTION NO. RS2006-1651

A resolution requesting the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation to furnish a toll-free hotline designated for citizens to call and report suspected criminal activity or official misconduct.

WHEREAS, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) is the primary criminal investigative agency in the state of Tennessee; and

WHEREAS, the TBI has the authority over the investigation of crime related to drugs, public corruption and official misconduct; and

WHEREAS, citizens that may have knowledge of criminal activity often choose to remain anonymous to protect themselves and their families; and

WHEREAS, due to a lack of resources or an unwillingness to investigate, there is a concern that local law enforcement agencies may not devote adequate time and attention to investigating complaints of certain suspected criminal activity; and

WHEREAS, maintaining a TBI hotline where citizens could anonymously call to report possible criminal activity within the State of Tennessee or misconduct of public officials might assist in bringing criminals to justice.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation to furnish a toll-free hotline designated for citizens to call and report suspected criminal activity or official misconduct.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a copy of this Resolution to Mark Gwyn, the director of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
