A resolution recognizing the Oglesby Community House in Nashville, Tennessee.

WHEREAS, it is fitting to recognize those public servants who through their extraordinary efforts, have distinguished themselves as true leaders and who have dedicated themselves to restoring and preserving the integrity of the Oglesby school building that is close and dear to their hearts; and

WHEREAS, Ernie Williams, President, John Blackman, Vice President, Ann Herbert, Treasurer and Gladys Martin, Secretary serve as officers of the Oglesby Community Club and who take pride in keeping the Oglesby property as a place for the community to use; and

WHEREAS, many events and projects have been sponsored by the Oglesby Community Club to raise money to restore the Oglesby School building, one of Davidson County's first schools; and

WHEREAS, built as the Mary Lee Academy in the late 19th century and used as a school building and meeting place for clubs it later became the Oglesby School serving students in grades 1-8; and

WHEREAS, the 4-H Club from Central High in the late 1930's worked very hard to keep this building in repairs where it was used for many school events and events related to 4-H; and

WHEREAS, the school closed in 1931 and the "old Oglesby community", now known as "Nippers Corner" has used the building since 1943 when the property and buildings were conveyed by the Davidson County Board of Education to the Oglesby community house for various community activities, meetings and events; and

WHEREAS, the Oglesby school, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003, is one of the few remaining school buildings of its style, noted for frame construction on stone piers and Queen Anne detailing, and age (1898) left in Davidson County, was placed on the registry for its role in rural history as a country school and it is listed for how it served as a Home Demonstration Club and now the community club; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes the Oglesby Community House as a significant part of history in Davidson County.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the Oglesby Community House in Nashville, Tennessee.

Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
