RESOLUTION NO. RS2006-1594

A resolution recognizing December 16, 2006, as "Homeless Memorial Day" in Nashville, Tennessee.

WHEREAS, adequate housing is essential for healthy families and communities; and

WHEREAS, housing has become increasingly inaccessible due to rising housing cost and a shortage of rental and single family housing; and

WHEREAS, every member of society, including individuals experiencing homelessness deserves the dignity of safe, decent, accessible, and affordable housing; and

WHEREAS, the city of Nashville recognizes and respects all citizens; and

WHEREAS, remembering the extreme hardships for homeless people, the Nashville Homeless Power Project will hold their 16th annual National "Homeless Memorial Day" celebration on Saturday, December 16, 2006, when the city of Nashville will come together at Riverfront Park for a public memorial service; and

WHEREAS, this gathering will remember and honor those homeless whose life's journey has come to a tragic end because of conditions associated with homelessness; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Council will continue to memorialize those lost in the street until it has identified sufficient resources and solutions to ensure that all residents of Nashville have a safe place to sleep and mechanisms for stepping out of homelessness; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes December 16, 2006, as "Homeless Memorial Day" and urge all citizens to learn more about the housing crisis facing our state.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing December 16, 2006, as "Homeless Memorial Day" in Nashville, Tennessee.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to the Nashville Homeless Power Project on behalf of the Homeless Community.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
