RESOLUTION NO. RS2006-1592

A resolution recognizing and commending the Honorable Amanda McClendon, Judge, for her outstanding public service to Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County, State of Tennessee.

WHEREAS, the Honorable Amanda McClendon, Judge, was born in 1957 in Nashville Tennessee as one of two children (older brother - Michael Lee McClendon) born to Harold E. McClendon of Nashville, Tennessee and Jean H. McClendon nee Olney of Reading, England; and

WHEREAS, Judge McClendon attended both Whitsitt and Glenview Elementaries, both Wright and Rose Park Junior Highs, and then graduated from McGavock High School in 1975; and

WHEREAS, Judge McClendon first attended MTSU for two and one-half years, then upon receiving a scholarship transferred and earned a B.S. degree from Vanderbilt University in 1980, with majors in Economics and History, along with several minors; and

WHEREAS, Judge McClendon lettered in competitive rifle shooting and soccer while in college, and was also very involved in Student government at MTSU; and

WHERAS, Judge McClendon earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D.) degree from the University of Tennessee College of Law in 1984; and

WHEREAS, Judge McClendon received the American Jurisprudence award for excellence in the course of study for Decedent's Estates while in law school; and

WHEREAS, Judge McClendon commenced her solo law practice in 1984 in Woodbine, the neighborhood where she was born; and

WHEREAS, on August 5, 1999, the people of the 16th Metropolitan Council District elected Judge McClendon (with over 50% of the votes cast in a four-person race) to represent them in the Tenth Metropolitan Council; and

WHEREAS, on August 7, 2003, unopposed in her race, Judge McClendon was elected again by the people of the 16th Metropolitan Council District to represent them in the Eleventh Metropolitan Council; and

WHEREAS, Judge McClendon was, and is, the second female attorney to have ever served in the Metropolitan Council since its inception in 1963; and

WHEREAS, during her tenure in office from 1999 through 2003, Judge McClendon served on the following Council Committees: Public Works (Chair 2001-2002); Charter Revision; Federal Grants Review (Chair 2000-2001); Parks-Library-Recreation-Auditorium (Vice chair 2000-2001 and 2002-2003); Codes-Fair and Farmers Market (Vice Chair 1999-2000); and

WHEREAS, during her tenure in office from 2003 through 2006, Judge McClendon served on the following Council Committees: Budget and Finance (Vice Chair 2004-2005, Chair 2005-2006); Public Works; Charter Revision; Federal Grants Review (Vice Chair 2004-2005); and Rules-Confirmations-Public Elections (Chair 2003-2004); and

WHEREAS, on May 2 2006, with over 57% of the votes cast in a three person race, Judge McClendon was successful in her county-wide bid to become the Democratic Party's candidate for Circuit Court Judge, Division II, for Davidson County, Tennessee and ran unopposed in the General Election for the 8 year term on August 3 2006;

WHEREAS, In order to take the Bench on September 1 2006 Judge McClendon did, with great sadness, resign her position as a member of the Eleventh Metropolitan Council representing the 16th District; and

WHEREAS, during her tenure in office in the Metropolitan Council, Judge McClendon comported herself with singular dignity and grace in the discharge of her duties and provided exemplary leadership on many issues, especially through her graciousness under pressure to those with whom she might disagree, showing great sensitivity to a diversity of opinion; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes the Honorable Amanda McClendon, Judge, for her outstanding contributions to our community, and thanks her for her service to the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County, Tennessee, as Council Representative for the 16th District for the Tenth and Eleventh Metropolitan Council, and extends to her and to her family the heartfelt felicitations of each and every Member of the Metropolitan Council.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing and commending the Honorable Amanda McClendon, Judge, for her outstanding public service to Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County, State of Tennessee.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk's Office is hereby directed to prepare a hand-lettered scroll to be presented to the Honorable Amanda McClendon, Judge of the Second Circuit Court.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
