RESOLUTION NO. RS2006-1591
A resolution recognizing the 70th Anniversary of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated, Alpha Chi Chapter at Tennessee State University in Nashville, Tennessee.
WHEREAS,
on January 13, 1913, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was founded by twenty-two collegiate
women at Howard University; these young women wanted to use their collective
strength to promote academic excellence; to provide scholarships; to provide
support to the underserved; educate and stimulate participation in the establishment
of positive public policy; and to highlight issues and provide solutions for
problems in their communities; making their first public act of involvement
was their participation in the Women's Suffrage March in Washington D.C., March
1913; and
WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta was incorporated in 1930 and is a private, non-profit
organization whose mission is to provide assistance and support through established
programs in local communities throughout the world; a sisterhood of more than
200,000 predominately Black college educated women, the Sorority currently has
over 900 chapters located in the United States, England, Japan (Tokyo and Okinawa),
Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas and the Republic of Korea.
WHEREAS, to continue the vision of its 22 founders, Alpha Chi Chapter was found and based its foundation on Delta Sigma Theta's Five Point Thrust of Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health and Political Awareness and Involvement; and
WHEREAS, Alpha Chi Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta exemplifies the characteristic of women of distinction making a difference; throughout Delta Sigma Theta, Incorporated esteemed history, Alpha Chi Chapter has demonstrated the utmost sisterhood, ability, and integrity, receiving the respect, admiration and membership of college women entering Tennessee State University where they enter to learn and depart to serve; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes and congratulates Alpha Chi Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated in celebrating 70 years of legacy in their commitment to vision and successful work in public service and wish the sisters of Delta Sigma Theta continued success in future endeavors, individually and collectively.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
SECTION 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Delta Sigma Theta, Alpha Chi Chapter of Tennessee State University on this joyous 70th Anniversary occasion.
SECTION 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
