RESOLUTION NO. RS2006-1590

A resolution proclaiming November 2-4, 2006, as National Middle School Recognition Days in Honor of the 33rd Annual National Middle School Association Conference and Exhibit.

Whereas, more than 8,000 Middle School Educators have been invited to convene in Nashville Tennessee November 2-4, 2006 to attend their annual conference to focus on strategies, trends, and innovations that will assist in the education of adolescents, and

Whereas, ongoing professional development for teachers and administrators is more critical now than ever in touching the lives of young people between the ages of 10 and 15 so as to provide them with structured, challenging, developmentally appropriate education, and

Whereas, the early adolescent years form a uniquely distinct developmental period between childhood and full adolescence which require educational activities to be crafted so as to maintain the interest levels of the students while also being based on best practices, and

Whereas, except possibly during infancy, youth between 10-15 years of age, undergo more extensive physical, mental, social, and emotional changes than at any other time of life, and

Whereas, the attitudes and values that adolescents develop during these formative years largely determine a great deal of their behavior and patterns of interaction that will be maintained for many years, and

Whereas, parents continue as primary role models and guides for adolescents, although their peers do have influence on them, and the community serves as an extended classroom in which adolescents learn many lessons, and

Whereas, the middle school grades are crucial in the development of viable and productive citizens who will contribute to the well-being of our society and nation, and

Whereas, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes the National Middle School Association's 33rd Annual Conference and Exhibit and all participants who undertake the challenges of educating our Nation's children.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
