RESOLUTION NO. RS2006-1588
A resolution requesting Mayor Bill Purcell to initiate a contest to determine an official motto for The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County.
WHEREAS, many cities across the United States have official mottos that represent the city's culture, mission statement or identity; and
WHEREAS, the official motto for the state of Tennessee is "Agriculture and Commerce", which is included as part of official state seal; and
WHEREAS, although Nashville, Tennessee is commonly known throughout the world as "Music City, U.S.A.", the Council is of the opinion that Nashville needs a motto that adequately and appropriately reflects the city's values and desired identity; and
WHEREAS, a common mechanism for a city to establish an official motto is through a contest sponsored by the city in which citizens have the opportunity to submit suggestions for the city motto, with the winning entry receiving some form of a prize or recognition; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Mayor establish a contest for the designation of an official city motto for Nashville, Tennessee.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting Mayor Bill Purcell to initiate a contest to determine an official motto for the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County.
Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a copy of this Resolution to Mayor Bill Purcell.
Section 3. Mayor Purcell is further requested to submit the winning entry for an official motto for ratification by resolution of the Metropolitan Council.
Section 4. That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
