RESOLUTION NO. RS2006-1578
A resolution requesting the Mayor's Office of Emergency Management and the Nashville Fire Department to install safety devices along the river at Riverfront Park.
WHEREAS, on the night of August 11, 2006, two men pushed 33 year-old Tara Cole into the Cumberland River as she slept on a Riverfront Park dock; and
WHEREAS, two other men on the dock attempted to rescue her but were unable to pull her from the river's current; and
WHEREAS, many municipalities with public property along a waterfront have installed safety devices such as life rafts, life rings, rope and chains to provide assistance to persons in the water; and
WHEREAS, installing safety devices at Riverfront Park, such as life rings with approximately fifty feet of rope, would be an inexpensive means of preventing similar tragedies in the future.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Mayor's Office of Emergency Management and the Nashville Fire Department to install safety devices along the river at Riverfront Park.
Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a copy of this Resolution to Kevin Penney, the acting director of the Mayor's Office of Emergency Management, and to Fire Chief Stephen Halford.
Section 3. That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
