RESOLUTION NO. RS2006-1517

A resolution requesting the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department to install a surveillance camera in the vicinity of Hancock Street, North First Street and North Second Street.

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department has implemented a surveillance camera pilot project in certain areas of Nashville; and

WHEREAS, cameras have been installed in the Cleveland Park area of East Nashville and in the Second Avenue area of downtown in an effort to catch persons engaging in criminal activity and to deter crimes; and

WHEREAS, numerous citizens have complained about repeated criminal activity, including the sale of drugs and prostitution, occurring in the Hancock Street, North First Street and North Second Street vicinity; and

WHEREAS, the citizens of District 5 have made great strides in improving their neighborhoods and encouraging economic revitalization; and

WHEREAS, in an effort to help the residents of District 5 to further their goals of improving the quality of life in their neighborhoods, it is fitting and proper that the Police Department expand the pilot project regarding the use of surveillance cameras and install a visible camera in the area of Hancock Street, North First Street and North Second Street to help curtail the criminal activity in this area.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department to install a surveillance camera in the vicinity of Hancock Street, North First Street and North Second Street.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a copy of this Resolution to Police Chief Ronal Serpas.

Section 3. That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.

Mr. President:

I move to amend Resolution No. RS2006-1519 as follows:
1. By deleting the phrase "a visible camera", wherein it appears in the fifth recital clause, and substituting in lieu thereof the phrase "visible cameras".
2. By deleting the phrase "a surveillance camera", wherein it appears in the caption and in Section 1, and substituting in lieu thereof the phrase "surveillance cameras".
