RESOLUTION NO. RS2006-1483

A resolution recognizing Mr. Donald Capparella, Founder and Board Chairman of the Nashville Shakespeare Festival (NSF).

WHEREAS, the Nashville Shakespeare Festival (NSF), was founded in 1988, and will be celebrating 19 consecutive seasons at Centennial Park on Saturday, September 9, 2006, in honor of Donald Capparella, Founder and Chairman of the Board for his dedication, perseverance and innovative ideas with the festival; and

WHEREAS, in 1988, Donald Capparella and a group of emerging theater artists decided to put Shakespeare in front of the entire Nashville community by having their first performance in Centennial Park that featured no costumes, no sound equipment and lighting by car headlights, and a tradition was born; and

WHEREAS, since that time, the Nashville Shakespeare Festival [NSF] has provided quality Shakespearean performances to more than 150,000 Tennesseans in productions that are FREE to the public; and

WHEREAS, these performances showcase Shakespeare's timeless works re-imagined in creative, innovative productions that preserve the language that has lasted over 400 years. In addition, the Nashville Shakespeare Festival has introduced more than 120,000 young people to the works of William Shakespeare through its engaging interactive in-school workshops and tours; and

WHEREAS, Dedicated to educating, enriching and entertaining the Mid-South community through quality Shakespearean experiences, the Nashville Shakespeare Festival makes its programs accessible to everyone in the community regardless of age, cultural or socio-economic background; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes founder Donald Capparella as he enters his final season as Chairman of the NSF Board of Directors, and acknowledge September 9th, 2006 as Nashville Shakespeare Festival's Founder's Day in recognition of Mr. Capparella's tireless commitment to serving Nashville and Tennessee by producing quality theatre that enriches and unites our entire community.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Mr. Donald Capparella, Founder and Board Chairman of the Nashville Shakespeare Festival (NSF).

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Mr. Donald Capparella, Founder and Board Chairman of the Nashville Shakespeare Festival.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
