RESOLUTION NO. RS2006-1478

A resolution recognizing Henry Thomas Hopton on the celebration of his 90th birthday.

WHEREAS, saluting the exemplary life of Henry Thomas Hopton, who has lived ninety happy and rewarding years is truly a memorable occasion worthy of honor, praise and celebration; and

WHEREAS, Henry Thomas Hopton was born in Montgomery, Alabama on June 23, 1916, to Harold and Edith Hopton, who were originally from Bristol, England, and a graduate of Peabody Demonstration School before continuing his education at Vanderbilt University; and

WHEREAS, he was united in marriage to Ann Oliver, in Hampton Virginia, his soul mate of 61 years, and from their blessed union were born Shirley (George) Cudabac, Judy Lawrence, and Tom (Kay) Hopton who have benefited from his love, understanding and support, and is the proud grandfather of six grandchildren and one great granddaughter; and

WHEREAS, a highly respected member of the Nashville community, Mr. Hopton has been laudably devoted throughout his life to the service of his country, its Armed Forces and his fellow citizens; and

WHEREAS, a true patriot, Henry Hopton is a veteran who served with acumen and alacrity in defense of our nation as a member of the United States Army, during World War II, then as a veteran of the United States Air Force where he became a pilot flying B-24s in the Pacific participating in 35 missions; and

WHEREAS, after returning home from his tour in the Pacific and retiring from military service, Mr. Hopton settled in Nashville, where he joined his father in the contracting business that earned him the respect and admiration of his fellow citizens as an astute businessman and community leader; and

WHEREAS, Henry Hopton entering his 10th decade, is still an active and productive member of society, participating in various professional, civic and community organizations and events; and

WHEREAS, since joining the Hillsboro-Harding Exchange Club in 1972, Mr. Hopton has been a vital member having served as secretary, president elect and president and for over 30 of those years he has obtained most of the programs for the Hillsboro-Harding Exchange Club; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes Henry Thomas Hopton on the occasion of his 90th birthday and extend to him our best wishes for much continued happiness and good health.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Henry Thomas Hopton on the celebration of his 90th birthday.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Mr. Henry Thomas Hopton.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
