RESOLUTION NO. RS2006-1430
A resolution requesting the Davidson County Delegation to the Tennessee General Assembly to introduce and enact the necessary legislation allowing the Metropolitan Council to appoint a certified classroom teacher as a non-voting member of the Metropolitan Board of Public Education.
WHEREAS, Tenn. Code Ann. § 49-2-201 requires members of local boards of education to be elected by the people for four year terms; and
WHEREAS, state law currently makes no provision for a local legislative body to appoint a teacher as an ex-officio member of the local board of education; and
WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Board of Education has control over the $563 million dollar budget for our public schools, and is in charge of developing and implementing the educational curriculum; and
WHEREAS, due to their day-to-day interaction with students and the school administration, classroom teachers would provide much-needed insight to the Board of Education during deliberations on important matters that will impact the education of the children of this city; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council have the authority to appoint a classroom teacher as a non-voting member of the Metropolitan Board of Education.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. That
the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Davidson
County Delegation to the Tennessee General Assembly to introduce and enact the
necessary legislation allowing the Metropolitan Council to appoint a certified
classroom teacher as a non-voting member of the Metropolitan Board of Public
Education.
Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a copy of this Resolution
to each member of the Davidson County Delegation to the Tennessee General Assembly.
Section 3. That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
