RESOLUTION NO. RS2006-1394

A resolution recognizing the 85th Anniversary of the Nashville Branch of the Tennessee Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers.

WHEREAS, Civil Engineers hold paramount the safety, health and welfare of the public in the performance of their professional engineering duties; and

WHEREAS, Civil Engineers use their knowledge and skill to develop the Middle Tennessee region's infrastructure, designing and maintaining highways, bridges, airfields, harbors, waterways and other modes of transportation, creating safe, economical, environmentally sound pathways of travel; and

WHEREAS, Civil Engineers protect and improve the environment through surface and subsurface water quality protection and management, floodplain management, waterway and wetland oversight and conservation planning, watershed management and pollution prevention, stormwater management and wastewater treatment, to protect the quality of the water entering Tennessee's streams, lakes and aquifers and to provide safe drinking water; and

WHEREAS, Civil Engineers use their technical training to impartially assist in the development of property and the built environment, through responsible and knowledgeable site design, appropriate urban planning and land use development, and by designing buildings to safely house occupants while withstanding wind and earthquake hazards; and

WHEREAS, Civil Engineers analyze soils and site characteristics to engineer safe foundations for structures and pavements, protecting embankments from erosion, acting as faithful trustees of the public welfare by monitoring dam safety and overseeing dam repair and rehabilitation; and

WHERAS, Civil Engineers safeguard the nation's health by monitoring air quality, managing hazardous waste and nuclear waste, conserving and protecting the environment of the Middle Tennessee region; and

WHEREAS, Civil Engineers fulfill a vital role in the Middle Tennessee community by the performance of their professional duties and by providing public policy input to government decision makers; and

WHEREAS, Civil Engineers enhance the quality of life for the general public in Middle Tennessee, creating a community and environment that is more liveable and less vulnerable; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes the Nashville Branch of the American Society of Civil Engineers as they celebrate the occasion of their 85th anniversary and wish them continue success.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the 85th Anniversary of the Nashville Branch of the Tennessee Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to American Society of Civil Engineers President-Elect David Moss, of the Tennessee Section and American Society of Civil Engineers Nashville Branch President Rose Rodriquez.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
