A resolution recognizing and congratulating Mrs. Jill Speering on being named the 2006 Distinguished Teacher of the Year for all of Middle Tennessee.

WHEREAS, Mrs. Jill Speering, educator for 33 years, has devoted her career to providing the highest quality education for Nashville's students and is well deserving of this recognition; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Jill Speering has recently been named, by the Tennessee Education Association as the 2006 Distinguished Teacher of the Year for all of Middle Tennessee, an honor most befitting her outstanding tenure as a teacher as it recognizes the positive influence she has on so many young lives; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Jill Speering brings enthusiasm and energy to her students, has an excellent repertoire of teaching strategies, creativity, innovation, and vision that has brought invaluable assets to the classroom; and

WHEREAS, she is instrumental as the Teacher Leader, a role in which she has served for 12 years, as Coordinator of the Reading Recovery Program for Metropolitan Nashville Public School system; and

WHEREAS, Reading Recovery is a first grade intervention for struggling first grade readers and writers, Mrs. Speering not only teaches students of high reading and writing needs, she also trains teachers through Tennessee State University. In this capacity, Mrs. Speering has trained over 80 teachers in Reading Recovery and over 120 teachers in "Developing Literacy in Primary Classrooms."; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Speering not only works with teachers in Metro Schools, she has also trained teachers in Murfreesboro City schools, Rutherford County Schools and Coffee County Schools; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes Mrs. Jill Speering on receiving the Distinguished Teacher of the Year for 2006 for all of Middle Tennessee and commend her exceptional service to her students, salute her professional expertise while wishing her all the best in her future endeavors.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing and congratulating Mrs. Jill Speering on being named the 2006 Distinguished Teacher of the Year for all of Middle Tennessee.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Mrs. Jill Speering.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
