RESOLUTION NO. RS2006-1380

A resolution requesting the Metropolitan Board of Public Education to include a program to help children educate their parents about safe driving as part of the school curriculum.

WHEREAS, statistics show that at least one person dies every hour in the United States because of a failure to fasten their seatbelt while operating or riding in an automobile; and

WHEREAS, more than seventy percent of the persons killed in traffic related accidents in Tennessee were not wearing seatbelts; and

WHEREAS, the Tennessee Department of Transportation sponsors a "Click It or Ticket" campaign aimed at educating citizens in Tennessee about the necessity for wearing a seatbelt through safety checkpoints and public information messages; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan public schools are a great resource for teaching safety to children, which in turn can be passed by the children to the parents; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Board of Education add curriculum in the public schools geared toward helping children educate their parents about safe driving similar to the Click It or Ticket campaign sponsored by the state.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Metropolitan Board of Public Education to include a program to help children educate their parents about safe driving as part of the school curriculum.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a copy of this Resolution to Director of Schools Dr. Pedro Garcia, and to each member of the Metropolitan Board of Public Education.

Section 3. That the Department of Health is further requested to respond to the Council as to the feasibility of and/or action taken in compliance with the request stated in Section 1 hereof not later than sixty (60) days from the date of adoption of this Resolution.

Section 4. That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
