RESOLUTION NO. RS2006-1351

A resolution requesting the Mayor, the Department of General Services, and the Metropolitan Beautification and Environment Commission to develop a plan for the maintenance of shrubs, planters and other landscaping in front of the A.A. Birch Building, the Criminal Justice Center, the Ben West Building and the historic Metropolitan Courthouse.

WHEREAS, the Davidson county criminal courts will be moving into the new Justice A.A. Birch Building the week of June 12, 2006; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Courthouse is currently undergoing a complete renovation to provide a state-of-the-art court facility while maintaining the historic character of the building; and

WHEREAS, these new and renovated facilities will soon bring many more people to our downtown area on a daily basis; and

WHEREAS, shrubs, planters and other landscaping are currently allowed to remain in an unsightly condition, with weeds and debris greatly detracting from the beauty of the plants; and

WHEREAS, well-maintained landscaping is an inexpensive, yet highly effective tool for beautifying our downtown area; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Government makes every effort to ensure that the landscaping surrounding the Metropolitan Government buildings are consistently kept up at the highest level possible.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Mayor, the Department of General Services, and the Metropolitan Beautification and Environment Commission to develop a plan for the maintenance of shrubs, planters and other landscaping in front of the A.A. Birch Building, the Criminal Justice Center, the Ben West Building and the historic Metropolitan Courthouse.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a copy of this Resolution to Mayor Bill Purcell, to Nancy Whittemore, the Director of the Department of General Services, and to Veronica Frazier, the Executive Director of the Metropolitan Beautification and Environment Commission.

Section 3. That the Mayor, the Department of General Services and the Metropolitan Beautification and Environment Commission are further requested to respond to the Council as to the action taken in compliance with the request stated in Section 1 hereof not later than sixty (60) days from the date of adoption of this Resolution.

Section 4. That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
