RESOLUTION NO. RS2006-1350

A resolution requesting the Metropolitan Traffic and Parking Commission to provide free parking in all Metro-owned lots and garages if persons park 30 minutes or less.

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Charter provides that the Traffic and Parking Commission shall have control and management of all public parking garages, including the collection of fees or other charges for such parking garages; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority has instituted a program that provides for 30 minutes of free parking at the airport if a person parks for only 30 minutes or less; and

WHEREAS, many persons who utilize downtown public parking garages to conduct their business do so only for a short duration of time; and

WHEREAS, it would improve relations and provide for quicker turnover in Metro-owned parking lots and garages if a similar program were adopted that allows free parking if parking in those facilities were limited to 30 minutes or less; and

WHEREAS, the Metro Traffic and Parking Commission permits free parking in the Metro Courthouse lot on weekdays between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m., and all day on Saturdays and Sundays; and

WHEREAS, providing efficient and reasonably priced parking facilities will enhance and encourage opportunities in downtown Nashville.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Metro Traffic and Parking Commission to provide free parking in all Metro-owned lots and garages if persons park 30 minutes or less.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a copy of this Resolution by U.S. mail or electronic mail to each member of the Metropolitan Traffic and Parking Commission.

Section 3. That the Traffic and Parking Commission is further requested to inform The Metropolitan Council as to the feasibility of and/or the actions taken in compliance with the request contained in Section 1 thereof, not later than sixty (60) days after the adoption of this Resolution.

Section 4. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
