RESOLUTION NO. RS2006-1349

A resolution requesting the Metropolitan Department of General Services to install card key access at the rear of the Council Chamber.

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Department of General Services is responsible for the maintenance and security of City Hall; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Council Office and the Metropolitan Clerk's Office pay a substantial internal service fee for these maintenance and security services; and

WHEREAS, recent terrorist attacks and shootings in public buildings have increased concerns about the safety of public officials in government buildings; and

WHEREAS, the design of the Metropolitan Council Chamber currently allows members of the public free access through the doors from the gallery into the rear of the Chamber; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Clerk's Office and the Metropolitan Council Office, which are also located on the first floor of City Hall, have card key access into the facilities; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that card key access be installed in the rear of the Council Chamber to protect the safety of Members of Council, as well as to protect personal property.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Department of General Services to install card key access at the rear of the Council Chamber.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a copy of this Resolution to Nancy Whittemore, the director of the Department of General Services.

Section 3. That the Department of General Services is further requested to respond to the Council as to the feasibility of and/or action taken in compliance with the request stated in Section 1 hereof within sixty (60) days from the adoption of this Resolution.

Section 4. That this resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
