RESOLUTION NO. RS2006-1346

A resolution requesting the Nashville Fire Department to research and present information to the Council regarding the feasibility of implementing a "Vial of Life" program in Nashville and Davidson County.

WHEREAS, hospitals and emergency response agencies across the nation have begun implementing a "Vial of Life" program to help emergency personnel provide the appropriate care during medical emergencies; and

WHEREAS, the Vial of Life project consists of a promotional campaign to encourage citizens to place a completed personal medical information form along with a copy of the person's living will, Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) information, and their last EKG, if applicable, in a bag or Vial of Life magnet that is attached to the refrigerator; and

WHEREAS, The Vial of Life program is specifically designed for senior citizens and individuals with serious medical conditions to provide pertinent medical information to emergency personnel who respond to home emergencies; and

WHEREAS, the Vial of Life provides emergency medical technicians with important information and instructions regarding a person's medical condition during the first minutes of a critical illness or accident at a person's home; and

WHEREAS, in order to better protect the safety of the citizens of Nashville and Davidson County, it is fitting and proper that the Fire Department examine the feasibility of implementing the Vial of Life program in Nashville.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Nashville Fire Department to research and present information to the Council regarding the feasibility of implementing a "Vial of Life" program in Nashville and Davidson County.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a copy of this Resolution to Fire Chief Stephen Halford.

Section 3. That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
