RESOLUTION NO. RS2006-1326
A resolution requesting the Metropolitan Board of Parks and Recreation to name the new East Park Community Center, or another appropriate building at the park, in honor of Charlie Williams.
WHEREAS, the Nashville legal community and the citizens of East Nashville were stunned and saddened by the death of prominent attorney Charlie Williams on April 27, 2006; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Williams graduated from Isaac Litton High School and David Lipscomb University, and his law degree from Vanderbilt University in 1969; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Williams served the citizens of Nashville through his work as a lawyer for the Fraternal Order of Police in the 1970s and 1980s, and through his service as a member of the Metropolitan Sports Authority board; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Williams moved into the historic Edgefield neighborhood in 1976, at a time when the residents of the area were afraid to leave their homes due to the high level of crime; and
WHEREAS, Charlie Williams, worked tirelessly over the years to transform the Edgefield area into a safe and vibrant community; and
WHEREAS, as part of his work in the East Nashville community, Mr. Williams devoted his time to making East Park a safe place for children in the area to play and increasing the cultural and recreation opportunities in the area; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that Charlie Williams be recognized for his distinguished public and community service by naming the new East Park Community Center currently under construction, or some other appropriate building, in his honor.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Metropolitan Board of Parks and Recreation to name the new East Park Community Center, or another appropriate building at the park, in honor of Charlie Williams.
Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a copy of this Resolution to the members of the Board of Parks and Recreation, and to Mayor Bill Purcell.
Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
