RESOLUTION NO. RS2006-1300
A resolution to designate and recognize May 7-13, 2006, as Building Safety Week.
WHEREAS, through our continuing attention to building safety, we enjoy the comfort and peace of mind of structures that are safe and sound, and,
WHEREAS, building safety and the fire prevention officials are at work year round to guide the safe construction of buildings, and,
WHEREAS, the dedicated members of the Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County Department of Codes Administration and the Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County Fire Department, including architects, engineers, builders, and others in the construction industry, develop and enforce codes to safeguard the citizens of Nashville in the buildings where we live, work, play and learn, and,
WHEREAS, the International Codes, the most widely adopted building safety and fire prevention codes in the nation, are used by Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County and most U.S. cities, counties, and states. These modern, building safety codes also include safeguards to protect the public from natural disasters that can occur, such as hurricanes, snowstorms, tornadoes, wildland fires and earthquakes, and,
WHEREAS, Building Safety Week endorsed by the Department of Codes Administration and the Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County Fire Department, and sponsored by the International Code Council Foundation, is an excellent opportunity to educate the public. It is a perfect time to increase public awareness of the role building safety and fire prevention officials, local and state building departments, and federal agencies play in protecting lives and property, and,
WHEREAS, this year's theme, "Building a Safer World Together," encourages all citizens of Nashville to raise awareness of building safety. Everyone can take appropriate steps to ensure that the places where we live, work, play and learn are safe. Countless lives have been saved because of the building safety codes adopted and enforced by local and state agencies, and,
WHEREAS, this year, as we observe Building Safety Week, we ask all of the citizens of Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County to consider projects to improve building safety at home and in the community. We encourage our citizens to actively engage in activities directly related to building safety, by inspecting their fire/smoke alarm, having their homes heating and cooling unit checked, and inspecting the overall condition of their property, and to recognize our local building safety and fire prevention officials in the important role that they play in public safety.
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes and proclaims that May 7 through May 13, 2006, as Building Safety Week in Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County. Accordingly, the citizens of Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County are encouraged to join their fellow Americans in participating in Building Safety Week activities and assisting in efforts to improve building safety.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as to designate and recognize May 7-13, 2006, as Building Safety Week.
Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
