RESOLUTION NO. RS2006-1200

A resolution recognizing Anna Fleming, Kim Phelps, Kenichi Saito, Amanda Rene Walker, and Lizzy Solomon on winning honors in the Nashville Symphony essay contest.

WHEREAS, Ms. Anna Fleming, seventh grade student at Meigs Magnet Middle School was recently named the Grand Prize winner of the Nashville Symphony's "I, Too, Have a Dream" essay contest; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Anna Fleming was recognized at the Nashville Symphony's "Let Freedom Sing" concert on Sunday, January 15, 2006, for her winning essay; and

WHEREAS, every year the Nashville Symphony sponsors an essay contest for students in grades 5-12 in celebration of the national holiday observance in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; and

WHEREAS, in conjunction with the annual celebration concert honoring Dr. King's legacy the essay contest is opened to all public, private and home schooled students from across middle Tennessee; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Fleming's essay was selected from more than 140 students in grades 5-12 who submitted essays which honors slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; and

WHEREAS, other Metro Nashville Public School students who took honors include Kim Phelps of Martin Luther King Magnet High School, 7th-8th grade first place; Kenichi Saito of Bellevue Middle, 7th-8th grade category finalist; Amanda Rene Walker of Maplewood, 9th-12th grade first place; and Lizzy Solomon of J.T. Moore Middle, first place and along with Anna Fleming should all be commended for their efforts to keep Dr. King's dream alive; and

WHEREAS, celebrations such as essay contests are invaluable for remembering what Dr, King's courageous legacy has meant and continues to mean for Tennessee, the country, and the world; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes these fine young adults for their writing talents, knowledge and passion in pursuing and securing for future generations the dream first articulated by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and wish them continued success in their writing endeavors.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Anna Fleming, Kim Phelps, Kenichi Saito, Amanda Rene Walker, and Lizzy Solomon on winning honors in the Nashville Symphony essay contest.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Anna Fleming, Kim Phelps, Kenichi Saito, Amanda Rene Walker, and Lizzy Solomon.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
