A resolution proclaiming February 18, 2006, as Polar Bear Plunge day in Nashville, Tennessee.

WHEREAS, The Tennessee Law Enforcement Torch Run is part of a nationwide series of runs by law enforcement officers to raise public awareness and funds for Special Olympics; and

WHEREAS, Nashville joined the Law Enforcement Torch Run in 1986 when the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) conference was held in Nashville, Tennessee and during the conference then Metro Police Chief, Joe Casey, initiated the Tennessee Law Enforcement Torch Run here in Nashville; and

WHEREAS, each year members of the Metro Police Department, Metro Fire Department and other Middle Tennessee Law Enforcement Agencies work together to raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics with various fundraising events such as the Polar Bear Plunge; and

WHEREAS, on February 18, 2006, at Nashville Shores, the seventh annual Polar Bear Plunge will be held, were participates will run into Percy Priest Lake and completely submerge themselves before running back to shore; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize and proclaim February 18, 2006, as Polar Bear Plunge day and congratulate all participants who took the chilly plunge to help raise funds for the Special Olympics.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as proclaiming February 18, 2006, as Polar Bear Plunge day in Nashville, Tennessee.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council hereby directs the local weather authorities make February 18, 2006, the coldest day of the year.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Alan Bolick, Director of Special Olympics for Tennessee, Glenda Taylor of the Metropolitan Police Department and Jon Seaborg of the District Attorney's Office, representing Law Enforcement.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
