RESOLUTION NO. RS2006-1177

A resolution requesting the Tennessee Lottery Commission to report and advertise unclaimed lottery winnings on a regular basis.

WHEREAS, since its inception two years ago, the Tennessee Lottery has generated over $1.8 billion in gross ticket sales, which has resulted in $1 billion in prize money and $792 million for college scholarships; and

WHEREAS, winning lottery numbers are advertised on local television stations and in newspapers, as well as posted on the Lottery Commission's website; and

WHEREAS, the Lottery Commission's website contains a list of all past winning lottery ticket numbers, but does not identified which wining numbers have unclaimed prize money; and

WHEREAS, many people who play the lottery do not have access to the internet, and may miss the local media reports of winning numbers; and

WHEREAS, if unclaimed lottery prize money was widely advertised on an on-going basis, persons who play the lottery would be more likely to examine old tickets to determine if they might have an unclaimed winning ticket; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Tennessee Lottery Commission increase its efforts to advertise winning lottery ticket numbers and unclaimed prize money.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Tennessee lottery Commission to report and advertise unclaimed lottery winnings on a regular basis.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a copy of this resolution to Rebecca Graham Paul, the President and CEO of the Tennessee Lottery and to each member of the Tennessee Lottery Commission.

Section 3. The Tennessee Lottery Commission is further requested to respond to the Council as to the feasibility of and/or action taken in compliance with the request within sixty (60) days from the adoption of this Resolution.

Section 4. This resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
