A resolution requesting Governor Phil Bredesen, the Davidson County Delegation to the Tennessee General Assembly, and the entire Tennessee General Assembly to take the action necessary to allow veterans to obtain a driver's license without paying an application or renewal fee.

WHEREAS, over the course of history of this nation, United States veterans of all military branches have demonstrated an extraordinary devotion to duty and love for country, and their dedication, valor, and heroism exemplify the highest standards of personal conduct and career service; and

WHEREAS, time and time again, the United States has called upon our men and women in uniform to take up arms to secure, defend, and protect our great nation; and

WHEREAS, state law provides that an application and renewal fee shall be paid in order to obtain a Class D driver's license; and

WHEREAS, allowing veterans to obtain a driver's license without paying an application or renewal fee would be a small gesture of appreciation for the men and women that have risked their lives to protect the citizens of the United States of America; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Governor and Tennessee General Assembly take the action necessary to waive the fee for veterans seeking to obtain a driver's license.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Davidson County Delegation to the Tennessee General Assembly, and the entire Tennessee General Assembly to take the action necessary to amend the Tennessee Constitution to allow a portion of the lottery revenue generated in each county to be designated for local schools, police and fire functions.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a copy of this Resolution to Governor Phil Bredesen and to each member of the Tennessee General Assembly.

Section 3. The Governor's Office and the Davidson County Delegation to the Tennessee General Assembly are further requested to respond to the Council regarding the request stated in Section 1 hereof within ninety (90) days from the adoption of this Resolution.

Section 4. That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
