RESOLUTION NO. RS2006-1131

A resolution recognizing Nashville Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) bus operators Mark Johnson, Goran Ilicic, Darryl Howard and Ted Thompson.

WHEREAS, Tennessean's Nashville Metropolitan Transit Authority bus operators are a vital part of our city traveling millions of miles each year as they transport students and the general public to and from their day to day activities; and

WHEREAS, MTA bus operators are committed to professional development and training to improve their knowledge and skills, and to continuing education and advocacy for better traffic and road conditions as a way to ensure the safety and well-being of all citizens who ride MTA; and

WHEREAS, the Tennessee Public Transportation Association's (TPTA) annual conference and roadeo began in 1979 attracting the best bus operators from around the State of Tennessee to compete, develop inter-company relationships, demonstrate their craft, and enhance skills and techniques; and

WHEREAS, approximately 30 bus operators from around Tennessee participated in the Tennessee Public Transportation Association's (TPTA) annual conference and roadeo hosted by the Nashville MTA, in partnership with other Middle Tennessee Transit providers including the Tennessee Department of Transportation, the Regional Transportation Authority, TMA Group/Franklin Transit Authority, Mid Cumberland Human Resources Agency, and the Clarksville Transit System; and

WHEREAS, the annual roadeo competition consisted of drivers from across the state expertly maneuvering a 40-foot bus, 35-foot bus, or paratransit van through a timed obstacle course; and

WHEREAS, bus operators Mark Johnson, Goran Ilicic, Darryl Howard and Ted Thompson represented the Nashville Metropolitan Transit Authority and brought home the "Big Wheel Award" in both the 40-foot and paratransit van divisions; and

WHEREAS, Mark Johnson and Goran Ilicic finished first and second respectively in the 40-foot bus division and Darryl Howard and Ted Thompson placed first and second respectively in the paratransit van division; and

WHEREAS, the Tennessee Public Transportation Association's (TPTA) annual conference is a chance for transportation officials and providers to participate in educational sessions, networking and information sharing, and discussion of key issues involving public transportation in Tennessee and an opportunity to recognize some of the outstanding contributors to public transportation in Tennessee; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes and commends bus operators Mark Johnson, Goran Ilicic, Darryl Howard and Ted Thompson and express appreciation to them for the professionalism they exhibit in focusing on the care and concern which they provide daily for the safety of all citizens of Nashville.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Nashville Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) bus operators Mark Johnson, Goran Ilicic, Darryl Howard and Ted Thompson.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Paul J. Ballard, Chief Executive Officer of the Nashville Metropolitan Transit Authority on behalf of bus operators Mark Johnson, Goran Ilicic, Darryl Howard and Ted Thompson.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
