A resolution recognizing and congratulating former Nashville Sounds owner and Vanderbilt Coach Larry Schmittou upon his induction into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame.

WHEREAS, Larry Schmittou, has a passion for baseball, he has played, coached, promoted, marketed, lived and breathed more baseball than anybody in the city's history; and

WHEREAS, this year's program marks the 40th anniversary of the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame banquet; and

WHEREAS, Larry Schmittou, is one of eleven 2006 inductees who will be enshrined into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame on February 24, 2006 at the Renaissance Hotel, an honor most befitting recognition of his service to baseball; and

WHEREAS, Larry Schmittou - former president and original owner of the Nashville Sounds is credited with bringing professional baseball back to Nashville in 1978; and

WHEREAS, prior to the Sounds, he won over 500 games as a sandlot baseball coach, over 300 games, four divisional titles and two SEC championships at Vanderbilt University where he was named SEC Coach of the Year in 1973 and 1974; and

WHEREAS, in professional baseball, Schmittou was named AA Executive of the Year in 1978 and AAA Executive of the Year in 1989; and

WHEREAS, for the above and many other accomplishments, his impeccable moral standards and his impressive work ethic, Larry Schmittou has been selected for induction into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame; and

WHEREAS, throughout his illustrious career, Larry Schmittou has been supported by his loving family and friends; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize and join the family and friends of Larry Schmittou in congratulating him upon his induction into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame, honor, and commend him for his substantial legacy as a baseball icon, and offer our thanks for the dedication which he has shown our City.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing and congratulating former Nashville Sounds owner and Vanderbilt Coach Larry Schmittou upon his induction into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Mr. Larry Schmittou.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
