RESOLUTION NO. RS2005-995

A resolution requesting the Mayor to implement a policy of requiring all Metropolitan Government department heads and members of the Mayor's cabinet to reside in Davidson County.

WHEREAS, certain Metropolitan Government department heads and members of the Mayor's senior staff reside outside of Davidson County; and

WHEREAS, hiring out-of-county residents to fill such important positions sends a message to Davidson County taxpayers that none of Davidson County's 560,000 residents are qualified to perform such work; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Council recently appropriated $10,000 for an economic impact study to determine whether the high number of out-of-county Metropolitan Government employees in general has a detrimental effect on the Davidson County economy; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that department heads and key Mayor's Office personnel reside in Davidson County since they are making important decisions every day that impact the citizens of Davidson County, whose tax dollars are paying the salaries of such personnel.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Mayor to implement a policy of requiring all Metropolitan Government department heads and members of the Mayor's cabinet to reside in Davidson County.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a copy of this Resolution to Mayor Bill Purcell.

Section 3. That the Mayor is further requested to respond to the Council regarding the request identified in Section 1 hereof not later than sixty (60) days from the date of adoption of this Resolution.

Section 4. That this resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
