RESOLUTION NO. RS2005-945

A resolution recognizing Michael Christman, Patrick Dailey, Charlie Dowdy, and Christopher Waters.

WHEREAS, it is fitting that we salute those youth who, through their extraordinary artistic talents, have distinguished themselves in their respective fields, and specially recognize those talented youth of Nashville whose creative abilities find outlet and expression through art; and

WHEREAS, Michael Christman, Patrick Dailey, Charlie Dowdy, and Christopher Waters are such individuals who attended the National Association for the Advancement of Colorado People's 2005 Annual Convention (NAACP) Convention to represent the ACT-SO Nashville Branch; and

WHEREAS, Michael Christman represented the ACT-SO Nashville Branch in the category of Music Instrumental Contemporary, Patrick Dailey in the category of Music Vocal Contemporary, Music Vocal Classical, Charlie Dowdy in the category of Dance and Christopher Waters in the category of Music Instrumental Classical; and

WHEREAS, Michael Christman, a sophomore at The Nashville School of the Arts competed in Music Instrumental Contemporary, entertained the audience with his Guitar arrangement of Georgia on my Mind. Michael is a junior golfer, and has serve as Standard Bearer for the Bell South Tour at Gaylord Golf Course and the (LPGA) Franklin Mortgage Championship at Legends Golf Course in Franklin, Tennessee; and

WHEREAS, Patrick Dailey wowed the audience with his rendition of At Last by Etta James and Deep River" when he competed in Music Vocal Contemporary and Music Vocal Classical. Patrick is an eleventh grader attending The Nashville School of the Arts majoring in Vocal Music Performance with a minor in Dance. He is a member of the Award Winning Madrigal Singers, the widely-acclaimed Pop Ensemble and the highly-sought after Black Heritage Dance and Performance Company. He is active in the school, community and church, serving as student Director of the True Believers Gospel Choir, the Chapter of the Christian Athletes, Praise Team Vocalist, the Friendship Mass Choir and the Voice of Vision College Choir; and

WHEREAS, Charlie Dowdy took the top prize in Dance winning a Gold Medal, two thousand dollars and a HP Laptop Computer. Charlie is a sophomore at The Nashville School of the Arts. He began his dancing career eight years ago at Salama Urban Ministries. He has performed several musicals including, Guys and Dolls, The Wiz, Your Arms are too Short to Box with God, and West Side Story. In the past year, he has studied at Debbie Allen's Academy Summer Intensive Program, taken dance classes from the EDGE Performing Arts Center in Los Angeles and was awarded a scholarship to the Broadway Dance Center. Charlie's goal is to become a member of the Alvin Ailey's American Dance Theater; and

WHEREAS, Christopher Waters captured the Bronze medal, one thousand dollar and a HP Laptop Computer for his viola classical performance of Pema Con Variazioni by Marais. A recent graduate of The Nashville School of the Arts, he was a member of the Nashville Youth Orchestra at Vanderbilt, and Mid State Orchestra. Christopher received the Outstanding Music Performance Scholarship and the Whirlpool Sons and Daughters $16,000.00 scholarship. He will be attending the University of Memphis this fall, majoring in Music Education. Christopher aspirations are to establish an African American String Quartet and tour the world; and

WHEREAS, ACT-SO was founded in 1978 by the late African-American journalist Vernon Jarrett; and

WHEREAS, ACT-SO is a major initiative of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People that is designed to stimulate, improve and encourage high academic and cultural achievement among African-American high school students; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes these young men for their dedication and commitment to the arts and wish them continued success in the future.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Michael Christman, Patrick Dailey, Charlie Dowdy, and Christopher Waters.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Michael Christman, Patrick Dailey, Charlie Dowdy, and Christopher Waters.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
