RESOLUTION NO. RS2005-892

A resolution recognizing Greg Rodriguez, founder of the Tennessee Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

WHEREAS, on June 8, 2005 the citizens of Nashville and Davidson County mourned the loss of a great friend and community servant; and

WHEREAS, Greg Rodriquez, was born and raised in McAllen, Texas and moved to Nashville, Tennessee in 1994 to work in the hospitality industry; and

WHEREAS, in 1997, Greg Rodriquez co-founded the Tennessee Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and served as president of the Chamber since its' founding until his death and through this organization he worked on issues which affected the welfare and quality of life of the Nashville Hispanic community; and

WHEREAS, on March 19, 2002, Mayor Bill Purcell, appointed Greg Rodriquez to the Metro Nashville Civil Service Commission where he served as Vice Chairman. In this capacity, he tirelessly served the city of Nashville and its employees; and

WHEREAS, in 2004, Governor Phil Bredesen appointed Greg Rodriquez to the State of Tennessee Commission of Safety, as executive administrative assistant, to help promote minority and immigrant involvement; and

WHEREAS, Greg Rodriguez served on various national and regional boards and commissions including; Stand for Children, the Greater Nashville Area Lodging and Hospitality Association, the Hispanic Contractors of America, and the Tennessee Human Rights Commission; and

WHEREAS, Greg Rodriguez has received numerous awards and accolades throughout his lifetime; and

WHEREAS, Greg Rodriguez was a pioneer and a champion to the Hispanic Community of Nashville, Tennessee in his advocacy for education, small business, and civil rights for all Latinos; and

WHEREAS, Greg Rodriguez's passing has left a void in the lives of his family and his extended family - the Hispanic citizens of Nashville, Tennessee; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council express their condolences to the family of Greg Rodriguez on his passing.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record recognizing Greg Rodriguez, founder of the Tennessee Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, for his many contributions to the City of Nashville and his tireless efforts promoting equality for all in Davidson County, as well as in the State of Tennessee.

Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
