A resolution proclaiming June 14, 2005 as Flag Day.

WHEREAS, on June 14th, 2005 Americans will observe the 228th birthday of the flag of the United States of America; and

WHEREAS, this special day provides a time for our Nation to reflect on our flag's rich history and its meaning to Americans and people around the world; and

WHEREAS, the American flag is considered a symbol of patriotism and dedication to American ideals; and

WHEREAS, the White stripes signifies Purity and Innocence; Red, Hardiness and Valor; Blue signifies Vigilance, Perseverance and Justice; and

WHEREAS, on June 14, 1777 the Continental Congress of the United States voted and adopted the approval of the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States; and

WHEREAS, Flag Day was first celebrated throughout the country in 1877 to mark the centennial of the birth of our national symbol; and

WHEREAS, in recent years Flag Day has become our "forgotten holiday," being virtually ignored by the news media, our educational institutions, and our governmental bodies; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes and proclaims, June 14, 2005 to be "Flag Day" in Davidson County and encourages all residents and businesses in Nashville, Tennessee and people across this great Nation to display the American Flag of the United States on that day with pride.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as proclaiming June 14, 2005 as Flag Day.

Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
