RESOLUTION NO. RS2005-870

A resolution requesting the Director of Finance and the Metropolitan Employee Benefit Board to study the feasibility of requiring all Metropolitan Government employees to utilize Nashville General Hospital at Meharry for non-emergency medical services.

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Government currently employs approximately 11,000 people to perform its various government services; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Government pays seventy-five percent (75%) of the cost of health insurance premiums for its full-time employees; and

WHEREAS, as part of the fiscal year 2004-2005 operating budget adopted in June 2004, the Metropolitan Council appropriated $19,979,300 as a subsidy for the operation of Nashville General Hospital; and

WHEREAS, the Hospital Authority has entered into agreements with Meharry Medical College and Vanderbilt University to provide healthcare services at Nashville General Hospital; and

WHEREAS, Nashville General Hospital at Meharry is committed to providing excellent healthcare to the residents of Nashville and Davidson County; and

WHEREAS, Nashville General Hospital currently provides an Injured On Duty Clinic for Metropolitan Government employees and provides physicals for the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department; and

WHEREAS, requiring all Metropolitan Government employees to obtain their non-emergency medical care from Nashville General Hospital at Meharry could result in lower costs and greater efficiency to the Metropolitan Government, as well as benefit General Hospital financially.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Director of Finance and the Metropolitan Employee Benefit Board to study the feasibility of requiring all Metropolitan Government employees to utilize Nashville General Hospital at Meharry for non-emergency medical services.

Section 2. That the Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a copy of this Resolution by United States mail, interdepartmental mail or electronic mail to David Manning, the Director of Finance, and to each member of the Metropolitan Employee Benefit Board.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
