RESOLUTION NO. RS2005-845

A resolution requesting the Metropolitan Department of Public Works and the Davidson County Sheriff's Office to collaborate and organize "Operation Neat Streets".

WHEREAS, Section 8.402 of the Metropolitan Charter provides that the Metropolitan Department of Public Works is responsible for the maintenance and cleaning of roads, highways, streets, alleys, and other public places within the area of the Metropolitan Government; and

WHEREAS, the Davidson County Sheriff's Office in the past has used inmates at the county workhouse to clean up areas within the Metropolitan Government; and

WHEREAS, Nashville, Tennessee is a major tourist destination, with visitors from all over the world coming to Nashville to experience all that Music City, U.S.A. has to offer; and

WHEREAS, Travel & Leisure magazine recently named Nashville as America's Friendliest City; and

WHEREAS, in addition to being the friendliest city, a worthy goal of Nashville should be to become the cleanest city as well; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Department of Public Works and the Davidson County Sheriff's Office work together to organize a clean-up crew with a name such as "Operation Neat Streets" to clean up areas of Nashville in an effort to enhance the aesthetic beauty of our city.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Metropolitan Department of Public Works and the Davidson County Sheriff's Office to collaborate and organize "Operation Neat Streets".

Section 2. The Department of Public Works and the Sheriff's Office are further requested to respond to the Council as to the feasibility and/or action taken in compliance with the request stated in Section 1 hereof not later than sixty (60) days from the adoption of this Resolution.

Section 3. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a copy of this Resolution to Billy Lynch, the Director of the Department of Public Works, and to Sheriff Daron Hall.

Section 4. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
