RESOLUTION NO. RS2005-811

A resolution recognizing African-American Civil War Re-enactor Bill Radcliff.

WHEREAS, Bill Radcliff has been a reenactor for 19 years and is dedicated to preserving the history of the American Civil War by reenacting a part of our country's history; and

WHEREAS, this activity of military reenactments is an enriching and educational experience for all, especially for our young people who have a chance to see their country's history come to life; and

WHEREAS, Bill Radcliff has portrayed a Sergeant with the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment Company B, a 1st Sergeant with the 13th United States Colored Troops Company A and a Civil War Sailor with the United States Naval Landing Party; and

WHEREAS, Bill Radcliff has participated in reenactments from Connecticut to Florida to Oklahoma to West Virginia while dressing in a Union Army uniform while making presentations to schools, civic groups, libraries, living camps and other places to tell the history of the African American soldier's participation in the Civil War; and

WHEREAS, not only has Bill Radcliff appeared on the History Channel in the "Civil War Journal", but he was chosen to model for a bronze sculpture that will be placed in the Nashville National Cemetery honoring 2,000 African Americans who lost their lives in the Civil War and in memory of 200,000 African Americans who served in this great conflict between the States, and it is the first monument of its kind in a United States National Cemetery of an African American soldier who served in the Civil War; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes Bill Radcliff for educating and enriching the citizens of Davidson County and congratulate him on his involvement in our community.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing African-American Civil War Re-enactor Bill Radcliff.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Bill Radcliff.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
