RESOLUTION NO. RS2005-809

A resolution recognizing Genma Stringer Holmes for receiving the 2005 Madam C.J. Walker Award.

WHEREAS, it is fitting to salute those citizens who, through their extraordinary entrepreneurial efforts, have distinguished themselves as successful business professionals and community leaders of whom we can be proud; and

WHEREAS, one such noteworthy person is Genma Stringer Holmes, President and CEO of Nashville, Tennessee - based Holmes Pest Control, the recipient of the 2005 Madam C.J. Walker Award given annually by the Minorities And Women In Business (MWIB), magazine in Washington D.C.; and

WHEREAS, the Madam C.J. Walker Award is named after the first African-American millionaire women business owner, Madam C.J. Walker who built a financial empire from the ground up that employed thousands of African-Americans during the early 1900s. It recognizes an individual's outstanding and exceptional service in one's community and constantly strives to advance women and minorities in business and the education of diversity throughout the country; and

WHEREAS, Genma Stringer Holmes, a graduate of Tennessee State University, not only continues to model professionally, while running her business and home schooling her children, but is a dedicated and active volunteer in organizations both public and private in Tennessee, a well sought after speaker and a sponsor of UNA Football since 1998; and

WHEREAS, Genma Stringer Holmes has received several awards and accolades for her work and has been featured in such magazines as Black Enterprise, Essence, Woman Entrepreneur and other magazines telling her story; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes Genma Stringer Holmes, on being chosen as the recipient of the 2005 Madam C.J. Award, salute her service to the City of Nashville, and extend to her our best wishes for future success.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Genma Stringer Holmes for receiving the 2005 Madam C.J. Walker Award.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Genma Stringer Holmes.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
