RESOLUTION NO. RS2005-800

A resolution honoring Dr. James A. Hefner for extraordinary service to Tennessee State University.

WHEREAS, Dr. James A. Hefner, President of Tennessee State University has exemplified extraordinary leadership and dedication during his fourteen year tenure with the university; and

WHEREAS, during his watch the university's endowment fund grew from 500+ thousand dollars to more than 11 million dollars; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Hefner created such a learning culture within the university that for the past eleven years Tennessee State University has been recognized in U.S. News and World Report's Guide to America's Best Colleges, an achievement which no other Historically Black College or University has been able to consistently achieve; and

WHEREAS, seeing the need for continuously striving for educational achievement, Dr. Hefner established at Tennessee State University a chapter of Phi Kappa Phi, which is recognized as the most prestigious international interdisciplinary honor society among colleges and universities; and

WHEREAS, Tennessee State University has come to have a $500 million dollar impact upon Nashville's economy with Dr. James A. Hefner at the helm; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council declares Thursday, April 21, 2005 as Dr. James A. Hefner Day in Nashville and Davidson County.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as honoring Dr. James A. Hefner for extraordinary service to Tennessee State University.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Dr. James A. Hefner.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
